VHS Officially Dead
November 20th, 2006 by PreZ
After an incredible 30 year run VHS is officially dead. The format that originally battled the Beta Max (and won) was no match for the current HD game consoles like PS3.
It was expected to be retired in January of 2007 but because of the Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii launch it was killed off early.
VHS is survived by, DVD, Tivo, VOD and DirecTV.
Born Vertical Helical Scan to parent JVC of Japan, the tape had a difficult childhood as it was forced to compete with Sony’s Betamax format but because of lower costs it soon won out and made Beta Max die an early death.
We salute you VHS! It was fun.
